My guesses:
+ Adam E. started writing his name, but then the pay phone became free and he abandoned the effort.
+ There is a nearby sidewalk, which you didn't see, that has the question for which "a dame" is the answer.
+ Your friend has moved from Spain to Berkeley without telling you.
