This one's for you, dl004d

Today I went to the Super Stop 'n' Shop. Like many other grocery stores, they have a Stop 'n' Shop card, which customers can use to get advertised discounts.

I don't know if I have a Stop 'n' Shop card or not, because whenever I sign up for that kind of thing, I do it knowing full well that I will never actually carry the card with me when I go to the merchant who has given me the card.

When I went through the check-out line, the cashier asked if I had a Stop 'n' Shop card. I said I couldn't remember, but that, at any rate, I didn't have it with me.

The cashier replied: "That's ok. You don't need the card. We just give you the discount anyway."

So why even have a card? And why have special "card-only" discounts, if you're just going to give them to everyone anyway?

Maybe a stricter cashier would have pissed you off and caused you to take your grocery dollars to a rival store.

I'm pretty sure it's a store-wide policy just to give you the discount; it's not the first time this has happened...

Don't you see? You've stumbled on a store-wide policy that wasn't supposed to go public. Shhhhhh!

I've been typing in my phone number from my place in Berkeley from 1998 as a stand-in for the physical card, which you can do in CA, for the last 10 years, and at the end the cashier always says, "Thank you Mrs. Bundy" (Bundy was the last name of the only housemate of mine together enough to sign up for a card). Thing is, last time that sentence was followed by "You'll be receiving your free 10$ gift certificate in the mail." Except I won't be because that will be going to Mr. Bundy. My New Year's resolution is to get my own club card and enjoy the free groceries that I have earned. These days, I feel the fact that the store will be tracking my purchases is worth the extra grocery cash.

Very impressive homage to a dl004d post, by the way...

Thanks Tiny T. And dl004d just blew right past it!

Also, Anon, I used to do that, too, with my first Berkeley phone number, which was a great one -- 5105251105 -- but, eight phone numbers later, I start to get mixed up.
