Spacebook
I'm officially a hypocrite, after bad-mouthing Facebook for months, pleading ignorance and privacy, not wanting my students to find me, and being more interested in actual face-to-face human interaction than making cyber-friends. But one dark Monday -- one week ago -- I finally felt like the last person on earth and joined, only to discover that my own mother has been on Facebook for 2 months. Readers of this blog (Hi, Mom!) will recognize, however, that SJB's Mom is no stranger to the information superhighway.
Now I'm Facebook friends with the kid who gave me a black eye in middle school, a Jonas-brothers obsessed 2nd (or 3rd?) cousin, the guy who gave me a ride to the post office on my first day of college and my brother's Icelandic former roommate. No, I'm not going to friend any of my students, and I still value my privacy and would rather just make friends the old fashioned way, but... well... for the time being it's sorta entertaining to see who has babies and who's bald and who lives in the Phillipines. It's like a high school reunion that never ends, for better or for worse.
But I still want to start my own social networking site just for me; my place on the World Wide Web to be alone with my thoughts. I shall call it Spacebook. Sorry, membership is limited to me.
