Many days later...

AMHERST, Mass -- Actually, this post doesn't really need a dateline, since I've been here for a while, but I figured I'd at least update my whereabouts.

Current state(s) of mind: wary of technology, wondering where the summer went, thinking about where I can get a magnifying glass for Wednesday, wishing I'd had time to do more back-to-school shopping, content to have had a couple of weeks not consumed by research or teaching (aka "on vacation"), hoping the Noho real estate market does right by me, back to being ambivalent about my blog, praying the dog's allergies clear up soon, looking forward to fall visitors/hikes/concerts/bike rides/agritainment, asking myself if anyone really needs to know what I'm thinking about right now, glad I let someone else use the photocopier ahead of me this afternoon since now the German department thinks I'm a "nice person," contemplating buying a bucket of tomatoes and doing something saucy with them, a little nervous about the start of the semester, happy not to be a newbie anymore, ebullient at having had a swell Labor Day weekend, debating whether I should have let my Cooks Illustrated and Martha Stewart subscriptions lapse, poised to get the New York Times on Sundays, dubious about the state of Amherst's water, doubting the meteorological accuracy of the Farmer's Almanac, bummed that For Better or For Worse has ceased daily strips, secretly hoping that Addison will merit a cameo on How I Met Your Mother this season, unsure if the delicate cycle on my washing machine is delicate enough, mulling over the purchase of a new toaster but guilt-ridden that the old one hasn't actually broken yet, astounded that I can no longer remember what day is trash pick-up day but less so about recycling pick-up day, pondering how directing a thesis will affect my day-to-day productivity, remembering I need to investigate the purchase of a carpet-sweeper for Addison's summer home in Hartford, forgetting that the RNC started tonight, and glad I don't have to teach tomorrow.

Well, I am glad that someone else thinks about buying an appliance before the old one has bit the dust. Our toaster is grungy and not very good, and DL004D won't let me get a new one (wasteful), but with him out of town at the RNC, I may just get it anyway. And a new clock radio (which would play my ipod! but which also doesn't need replacing). Sigh.

I hear that. I've had my clock radio since middle school. I think the technology has improved since then.

just bought a new microwave myself. but the old one did in fact break. i really like the stream of consciousness style of your post. i'm in the same sort of transitioning into schedule-land world. it is not taking well to me. and there are 78 more things i should be doing each day but instead i'm blogging, facebooking, and drinking beers. anything but dissertating.

Beer probably should have gotten a shout-out in the acknowledgement section of my dissertation.

I don't deny the toaster's grungitude, but it does work perfectly well. Same with the clock radio. Now... if there's a new product out there that can perform both functions (wake me up and cook me breakfast), then that's worth a trip to Target.

I heard somewhere about an alarm clock that you stock with bacon, and it wakes you up to the smell of frying bacon, which you then, presumably, eat. And no, it wasn't in a Jim Gaffigan routine.
